BJP leaders defend Somya Gurjar’s candidature

Jaipur: The senior Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) leaders on Friday came in defence of Rajaram Gurjar, husband of Somya Gurjar, the party’s mayor candidate from JMC Greater after the Congress raised objections over police cases against Rajaram and a selfie controversy of Somya.

Leader of Opposition Gulab Chand Kataria said on Friday that a candidate is selected after a united decision and opinion of the party leaders.

“If there are allegations against Gulab Chand, does it mean the same are applied to his wife also? Law is taking its own course,” said Kataria about cases lodged against Rajaram.

Somya Gurjar had given testimony in some of the cases against her husband, who has been chairman of Karauli municipal council, and some of the Congress leaders raised this issue when she was selected as the mayor candidate.

There are reports in the political circles that Rajaram was secretly engaged in persuading the party MLAs, former MLAs and other leaders so that equations are not titled against his wife at the last moment.

The city MLAs and senior party leaders had not attended the nomination of Somya. The chances of rebellion in the party cadre have increased after the protest by supporters of Sheel Dhabai and as senior party leaders including state president Satish Poonia are not medically well.

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Rajendra Rathore, however, ruled out reports of resentment. “We do not have any concern about cross-voting,” he said.

He cornered the Congress for not fielding any Muslim mayoral candidate despite the fact that the community votes for the party
